About

Ainsty Churches Romanian Orphans Support was founded in 1990, shortly after the Caucescu regime was ended.

The combined effect of the Caucescu government to encourage a large population and Catholic policy to discourage contraception resulted in large numbers of children abandoned by their parents, often because they could not afford to look after them. They, as well as children without parents, were consigned to state institutions.

Conditions in the state orphanages were grim, e.g. three or more children in a single bed with soiled bedding, inadequate food, filthy sanitation and children forced to go to bed in the afternoon to avoid staff having to care for them properly.
